Texturing With FSC-88 WB

Dan Sawatzky is known for using a wide variety of interesting textures in the signs he creates. One technique he is fond of using is applying FSC-88 WB with random brush strokes to add texture to routed letters. To quote Dan, ” I don’t want my signs to look like a machine made them. I want them to look handmade.” With Dan’s technique you get all of the benefit of a routed edge for achieving clean paint lines, while introducing an interesting hand-crafted look. Adding fine details like this helps you command premium dollar for your signs.

And the finished product is stunning! To read more about the techniques used to produce this sign, visit Dan’s blog post . Or follow other Dan Sawatzky projects at Speaking From Experience.

A guy named Guy (pronounced “Gee”) and a Robot named Marie

His name is Guy Martin. He is SCI-Arc trained (Southern California Institute of Architecture) and considers himself a Digital Architect. His partner is a robot named Marie with an 80’ reach and together they’ve fabricated complex composite creations for clients as varied as designer Philippe Starck, and the pioneering private space transport company, Space X.

At their facility in Southern California, Guy Martin Design is leveraging digital technology to explore new processes for creating complex forms and compound geometries with the latest composite materials. For Guy, it’s about getting closer to the means of production and the materials, in essence taking back some of the control the craft of architecture had when he was the master mason.

FSC-88 The Most Versatile Primer On The Planet

After listening to sign makers for years tell us about their dissatisfaction with available primers, we created FSC-88WB. Spray it, brush it, roll it or squeegee it on, this one-part water-based product easily adapts to your chosen application method.

FSC-88WB is a high-solid content, high-build primer, perfect for the closed cell structure of Precision Board Plus since all sanding needs to occur within the build of the primer.

Time Saving Tip: Using the “squeegee technique” described in our application video, followed by some minor sanding, allows you to fill minor imperfections and achieve a very smooth, paint-ready finish with minimal time and effort.

Though easily sanded to produce an ultra-smooth finish, FSC-88 WB can also be used with various brush techniques to create interesting texture for your signs (see related story).

Regardless of the application technique you use, be sure to achieve full wet out with your first coat of FSC-88 WB. Never sand between coats and use a shop fan (not radiant heat) to achieve complete drying prior to painting your Precision Board Plus sign. Check out our all our How To tips for smooth-finishing and priming with FSC-88 WB.
