Quality Signs come from Quality Material

With over 40 years of experience as a Sign-maker Danny St.Clair, owner of St.Clair Signs Inc., knows that quality signs come from quality material. That’s why when he and his son/business partner Matthew St.Clair were contracted by The Pete Store of Raphine to create these beautiful dimensional signs, he knew he had to use Precision Board Plus and Companion Products.

The frame inside was for added rigidity, but mainly used as a frame to attach four bolts through the rear of the sign for mounting purposes. You can see the detail of this in the photographs.

For this project they used two 1in. thick pieces of 15 lb. Precision Board Plus, FSC-88 primer, PB Bond 240, FSC-360 WB. The CNC machining they outsourced to Harbor Sales (who also supplied their Precision Board Plus). “They did a great job of machining the material and have great customer service as well!” Says Matthew St.Clair.

“This was our first time working with Precision Board Plus and Companion Products, we were very satisfied with the end results. We have been very impressed with the reputation of Precision Board and its versatility. One of our heroes is Dan Sawatzky, so we have been greatly impressed and educated by his experiences. We wanted something lightweight with the ability to be routed and this was it.”

Two Densities One Sign

Synergy Sign & Graphics LLC is at it again and we’ve got the inside track on how they continually have success no matter what project they are working on!

First and foremost, they take advantage of Precision Board’s wide selection of products. For this sign, they used our higher density PBLT-30 to machine extra durable crisp lettering while utilizing our easy to machine industry standard PBLT-15 for the core. Using our PB-Bond 240 urethane adhesive they are able to combine two densities for one amazing sign.

Secondly, they save time and money by using our special formulated texture coatings to easily create incredible looking signs. On this sign they achieved an impressive textured effect by using our TSF-45 texture surface finish. This single-component, high solids flexible coating is a great choice to get unique textures in exterior or interior applications.

Fine Art: Sculpting HDU With Master Artist Brett Steeves

One of the most impressive projects we’ve seen at Coastal Enterprises is the hand-carved sculpture of wild horses sculpture featured on our home page. We’ve always marveled at the skill required to bring such a beautiful piece to life, and when offered an opportunity to interview its creator recently, we we were overjoyed!

The artist, Brett Steeves, also known as “Somers”, is a freelance artist out of western New York. Largely self-taught throughout his 35-year career, Brett is also an Indiana University and Herron Art School alumni. His studio often collaborates with designers on a wide variety of projects. A client in Southwestern Florida mentioned to him that the high ceilings in their home left a rather large blank wall crying out for something to fill the void. As a solution to this issue, Somers designed and fabricated (entirely by hand) the magnificent sculpture featuring a herd of wild horses.

Beginning with three 4″ x 4′ x 8′ sheets of Precision Board PBLT-15, Somers shaped and carved the herd of wild horses in Bas-relief. The final pieces were primed with FSC-88WB Primer/Filler and coated with PB Hardcoat, before a faux finish was applied to create the appearance of a stone carving.

The sculpture was received well and fit right in the the designer’s vision and choices for the home. According to Somers, “Whenever I’m challenged with a sculpting project, my ‘go-to’ product is Precision Board. I can rely on it to withstand the elements and provide my clients with sculptures that will outlast anything else.”

Many commissioned sculptures created by Somers begin with Precision Board. These life-size dolphins were shaped with PBLT-4 so they would be light enough to be held up with monofilament line.

This multi-media sculpture required faux stones. Once again, PBLT-15 to the rescue!

Currently Somers spends much of his time working directly with designers and sculptors creating innovative ways to infuse artwork into every possible application. You can catch up with his ongoing news at somerscreative.com.

Signwriters Unite in Mazeppa!

Mazeppa Mardi Gras Letterhead Meet was held last week at Mike Meyer Signs in Mazeppa, MN. Representing 4 countries, 100 sign makers braved the cold Minnesota weather for sign seminars, music, meals, and fun. Kellie Miller, Customer Relations Manager at Coastal Enterprises was in attendance and has provided a recap of the festivities:

There was so much amazing talent in the small town of 850! All the beautiful panels, gold leaf, signwriting,                   3-dimensional signs, glass gilding, and truck lettering made it a plethora of the senses. The energy, laughter, conversations, and talent were overwhelming!  It was such a great environment to learn, practice, and try techniques for the first time. (Not to mention build relationships with people from around the world!)

A donated sheet of Precision Board Plus PBLT-15, along with numerous samples, provided a great opportunity for attendees to hone or experiment with their carving skills, with many painted, gold-leafed and smaltzed signs coming to life as the event came to a close.

Mike Meyer always puts on such great meets and if you haven’t attended one, you must sign up! www.mikemeyersigns.com

I had an absolutely brilliant time with so many wonderful people whom I’m honored to have as friends.  Thank you Mazeppa! ~ Kellie

Massive Maine Signage: Giants Among Us!

Tom Stade, who you may remember from our previous blog, The Maine Signcrafter, recently had a massive sign he made with Precision Board featured in a Sign Builder Illustrated article.

Using a combination of PBLT-15 and PBLT-12, in 4.5″ and 10″ thick 5′ x 10′ sheets, Tom crafted this true work of art almost entirely by himself.

The whole story can be seen .
