Quality Signs come from Quality Material

With over 40 years of experience as a Sign-maker Danny St.Clair, owner of St.Clair Signs Inc., knows that quality signs come from quality material. That’s why when he and his son/business partner Matthew St.Clair were contracted by The Pete Store of Raphine to create these beautiful dimensional signs, he knew he had to use Precision Board Plus and Companion Products.

The frame inside was for added rigidity, but mainly used as a frame to attach four bolts through the rear of the sign for mounting purposes. You can see the detail of this in the photographs.

For this project they used two 1in. thick pieces of 15 lb. Precision Board Plus, FSC-88 primer, PB Bond 240, FSC-360 WB. The CNC machining they outsourced to Harbor Sales (who also supplied their Precision Board Plus). “They did a great job of machining the material and have great customer service as well!” Says Matthew St.Clair.

“This was our first time working with Precision Board Plus and Companion Products, we were very satisfied with the end results. We have been very impressed with the reputation of Precision Board and its versatility. One of our heroes is Dan Sawatzky, so we have been greatly impressed and educated by his experiences. We wanted something lightweight with the ability to be routed and this was it.”

ISA is almost here…

We all know that Dan Sawatzky is a talented man that loves his Multicam CNC, Enroute software and Precision Board Plus PBLT-30.

But this time, he took a different approach to a sculpture he made for our booth which will be displayed at the ISA show April 9th, 10th and 11th.

Dan told us that he dug around in his Precision Board “stash” and found a solid piece of PBLT-40 (what… not PBLT-30?!) “It begged to be a Tiki. So I obliged.” He not only used a different density than what he favors, but he also carved this 5″ x 5″ x 22″ sculpture by hand. Watch it come to life on Dan’s blog.

When visiting ISA 2015 next month, stop by and see us at booth #5971.

Want to see Dan? He’ll be at booth # 712 with Multicam. Stay for a while to watch his presentation as PBLT-30 is happily being routed.

How To Make Prismatic Letters Stand Out With Synergy Sign & Graphics

1901341_10153802809240368_785612181_n“If I were to have used a lower density, the prismatic letters wouldn’t look half as sharp,” says Jim Dawson, owner of Synergy Sign & Graphics. He’s talking about a sign he made recently for F.S.R.C. Tanks, Inc., boasting prismatic letters that came out sharp as a knife.

Jim is the previous builder of the custom gearbox made from Precision Board Plus PBLT-30 and is well known for his creativity and innovation.“I wanted this sign to scream something different, something that would make it stand out from the normal signs people see every day. The owner of F.S.R.C. asked us to build him a sign that would be unique, but would also last forever, and we came up with the perfect idea,” recalls Dawson.

1911602_10153871674265368_819798923_n
Jim started this job with two sheets of 2″ x 4′ x 8′ Precision Board Plus PBLT-30, cutting them both on his 5′ x 10′ MultiCam CNC machine with software. “We CNC routed the 30lb. Precision Board, which is twice as dense as the 15lb. and can hold an extremely high level of detail. I knew if I were to try 15lb, the prismatic letters wouldn’t have the same pop as 30lb, which weighed in on my final decision,” explains Jim. “After we CNC-routed each face, we tig-welded an aluminum frame and attached it to the back of each sheet to provide strengthening and reinforcement.”

The pillars, as you may notice, are neither identical, nor entirely uniform. “As a graduate of Dan Sawatzky’s sculpting class, and thus, an amateur sculptor, I decided to shape the fiberglass-reinforced concrete posts entirely by hand. By doing this we hoped to give part of the sign a truly man-made aspect, as opposed to using cardboard forms as would most often be the case,” states Dawson.

Of course, the detail on the substrate isn’t the only thing that stands out on this sign. “We used a pretty bright color combination for the sign to add to it’s ‘wow’ factor,” reveals Jim. “After we primed the sign with Coastal’s FSC-88WB Primer/Filler, we used Sherwin-Williams Acrylic Latex Paints, Incredible White and SW6967 Frank Blue, to give it a really vibrant finish.”

Themed Signage For Giggle Ridge Adventure Golf

If there’s one thing most of the sign making industry knows by now, its that Dan Sawatzky knows his way around a sign. The proof is in the pudding with a couple of beautiful signs made using Precision Board Plus PBLT-30 by Dan and the Imagination Corporation for a major project they are working on.

In case you didn’t know, Dan has been busy building the addition to Giggle Ridge Adventure Golf for quite some time, designing, building and installing everything from signs to major park features. He has also been chronicling this journey in detail on his wonderful blog, be sure to check it out at: imaginationcorporation.com/journal.

Making 3-D Signs Is A Pretty Cool Job!

Talk to Doug Haffner, owner of Haffner’s Fantastic Creations, and it becomes clear that his sign making hobby became his livelihood and he enjoys it immensely. The quote on his website home page, “I literally can’t wait to get up every day and do this work”, is a testament to this as well.

After years working in the IT field for a marketing and advertising company, Doug purchased a CarveWright CNC router to work on different projects as a hobby. When his company downsized, Doug started Haffner’s Fantastic Creations out of his garage and got to work making 3-D signs. One of the first things Doug did was to attend one of Dan Sawatzky’s workshops (he has since gone to additional workshops), which introduced Doug to Precision Board HDU.

A year later Doug made the leap by purchasing a 4′ x 8′ CNC router and opening an actual shop of his own. At the time of writing this, Doug has been in business out of his own shop for a year and is learning new things every day and keeping busy. “I learned how to weld at Dan Sawatzky’s Sculpture Magic workshop, and purchased my own welder not too long ago. Three years ago, if you had told me I would be purchasing a welder in the future, I would have never believed it. It’s amazing where the sign industry has taken me”, says Haffner.

When you look at Doug’s projects, its clear that his work has a very unique, admirable style that has been honed over time. It should come as no surprise to hear he’s been featured in several magazines, and also on the TV show Extreme Makeovers: Home Edition, with a Star Wars project he made for free for a family that lost valuable Star Wars memorabilia in a tragic house fire.

Many, many of Doug’s projects feature Precision Board, which he likes to use because, “It’s so different than wood. There’s no grain, which makes cutting and carving it painless, and the fact that it comes in so many densities means the possibilities are endless.”

According to Doug, his advice for someone new to the sign industry is “Invest in yourself. Make sure you know what type of business you want to do. If you don’t want to do vinyl signs, make sure you don’t, because word gets around and you might find yourself doing work you don’t enjoy.”

Doug Haffner is also a member of the well-known elite “Walldogs” mural group and enjoys participating in the regular trips they undertake to different cities, painting murals and garnering interest in the sign painting industry. Some of you may remember the semi-secret “Mechanical Fish” competition we wrote about in several previous articles. Well, Doug participated in that project too, with quite an impressive project made using a combination of Precision Board and Wildfire invisible blacklight paint.

Hint: Looking closely at the project, what is really going down in Doug’s entry is Doug’s fish, the larger, more dangerous looking aquatic specimen, is eating a replica of the fish Dan Sawatzky made for the competition! A challenge perhaps?!
