We like big blocks and we can not lie…

We have a lot of action going on here this week! Making custom blocks is something we take pride in and is one of the great things that separates us from our competition. It only took a couple of days and two forklifts to get this 19 footer out the door.

Our team has been bonding blocks for over 20 years and tight bond joints are our specialty. Using our EP-76 high strength machinable epoxy, and adding PB granules, we’re able to match the density of the material which allows for ease of machining and the ability to keep the CNC  running fast.

It’s great that customers take advantage of our one-of-a-kind service. Custom bonded blocks save extreme amounts of time and money by arriving on the job ready to machine immediately.

Hand Shaping HDU made simple with Precision Board Plus

The Concrete Canoe Team of Chico State University was determined to build a mold out of high-density urethane this year when they found Coastal Enterprises Company through their competitors at University Nevada Reno Concrete Canoe. They initially intended to go with a mold design that would be CNC machined. However, due to changes in design they ran out of time and were forced to hand-shape their mold.

They were a little apprehensive at first having never worked with high-density urethane before. “We weren’t sure exactly how smoothly it was going to go, but once we started to work with it, we loved it! The Precision Board cut easily and was insanely workable. Using only hand tools, rasps, and files the results were smoother and more streamlined than we could have ever hoped for.” Chico State Team Member Kaylie Humbert said.

“The canoe project itself took months, however the Precision Board mold that we created only took a single day. It was so easy to work with I would absolutely recommend it. None of the team members had any experience working with Precision Board before and as beginners we were very pleased with the results that we were able to achieve. I can only imagine what professionals would do with it.”

If you haven’t seen it yet – be sure to check out the latest issue of Sign Builder Illustrated!

This particular article was written by Mark Roberts, owner of InterSign Group in Houston, TX. Mark has been in business for 38 years and has been using Precision Board Plus HDU for at least 15 of them.

In this write-up you’ll see how Kiddie Coast came to life. The project took Mark about 3 weeks of production time from start to finish which included digital printing, carving and painting of Precision Board. This article also offers you, the reader, tips and tricks on how to create a beautiful sign such as this one.

“The ease of working with Precision Board’s larger sheet sizes and multiple densities, helps with any job he’s working on. Precision Board Plus is my preferred HDU material. I have always had success with it, and am an extremely satisfied customer,” says Mark.  He also uses the FSC-88 WB Water Based Primer/Filler as it allows for fast coverage of HDU, dries rapidly and sands easily.

CSU Students use Precision Board to help them compete…

With the continuous support of Coastal Enterprises Company, CSUF’s Formula SAE team has successfully finished a vehicle for the past five consecutive years.

This coming year will be the first year they implement an aerodynamics package to the design. By using Precision Board Plus they are able to easily machine precise, high quality master molds for the wings.

“We have used the generous donations of Precision Board from Coastal Enterprises on previous years to manufacture our master molds for our carbon fiber chassis “. Says Carlos Gibson CSU Fullerton, Formula SAE Teams Captain. He continues to say, “We are one out of two schools in California that runs a full carbon fiber monocoque. This design feature would not be possible without the help we receive from your team at Coastal Enterprises every year”.

Coastal Enterprises would personally like to Congratulate Adam Morley who filmed and edited the video for CSUF’s Formula SAE Team and for winning 1st place for their video in the OESA Generation Auto Student Video Contest.

Veteran Signmaker Spotlight: Daniel Ortiz

Daniel Ortiz has been hand-carving signs since 1978, racking up an impressive 36 years of experience. He’s been using Precision Board for about 15 of those, and has built and designed some eye-catching signs along the way that we’re interested in sharing.

He learned his craft at The Woodsmith Studio circa 1979, which was famous for it’s hand-carved wood creations and 6 week wood-carving course.

Afterwards, he got into sign making and eventually started Coastwise Design, which operated until 2009 before becoming Coastwise Design Signs & Screen Printing. Over the years he’s gained some serious insight into the sign industry.

As many experienced sign makers know, going from carving wood to HDU is an easy transition. According to Daniel, “My first experience with Precision Board was in 2000. I’ve found that it’s a product that truly behaves itself when you’re carving it, specifically because it has no grain. Wood tells you what it wants you to do. If you’re cutting the wrong way, it will let you know. I still enjoy carving wood, but I really enjoy watching Precision Board come to life right before my eyes.”

We asked Daniel, with his years of experience in the industry, what advice he would give to new sign makers: “My advice to someone new to the industry would be to ask a lot of questions and read all the info they can. Also, talk to manufacturers – they know their products!”

Coastwise Design Signs & Screen Printing is a full-service signshop located North, VA, and specializes in 3-D signage. Additional information can be seen at: www.coastwisedesign.com.
