If you haven’t seen it yet – be sure to check out the latest issue of Sign Builder Illustrated!

This particular article was written by Mark Roberts, owner of InterSign Group in Houston, TX. Mark has been in business for 38 years and has been using Precision Board Plus HDU for at least 15 of them.

In this write-up you’ll see how Kiddie Coast came to life. The project took Mark about 3 weeks of production time from start to finish which included digital printing, carving and painting of Precision Board. This article also offers you, the reader, tips and tricks on how to create a beautiful sign such as this one.

“The ease of working with Precision Board’s larger sheet sizes and multiple densities, helps with any job he’s working on. Precision Board Plus is my preferred HDU material. I have always had success with it, and am an extremely satisfied customer,” says Mark.  He also uses the FSC-88 WB Water Based Primer/Filler as it allows for fast coverage of HDU, dries rapidly and sands easily.

If you would like to see more of Mark’s fabulous work, or would like information about his company go to http://www.theintersigngroup.com/ or call him at 713-941-6338.

Southwestern-Themed Signage & Art: Dan Keith Spotlight

Famous for its Southwest Cuisine, rich cultural heritage and popular extra-terrestrial hangout Roswell, New Mexico is a diverse and unique location. San Acacia resident and Jack-of-all-trades Dan Keith has been an artist all his life and has compiled such an amazing array of Precision Board projects (sculptures, signs, patterns, and more), that we’ve decided to showcase a portion of his art.

These two signs were built by Dan for the well-known Rancho Corazon and Rancho La Querencia, horse-ranches, which have merged into one. Both signs were built using Precision Board.

Dan’s father, A.J. Keith, had a major influence on both Dan and his art career. AJ learned photo-engraving from a German master engraver during the U.S. occupation of Germany after World War 2. After returning to the US, he began printing plates for all the local papers in Roswell, NM, enlisting a very young Dan as his helper.

Age 9 saw Dan and family move to Corrales, NM where he helped his father build an house and studio for his oil paintings. At the same time, Dan was apprenticed to a lady sculptor, cementing his involvement in the art trade.

This mirror frame was crafted by Dan out of Precision Board PBLT-30, based off his memories of attending the Kimo Theater in Albuquerque as a young boy. The Kimo Theater was built in 1927 in the popular-at-the-time Pueblo Deco style.

Following a diverse period of teenage years that included stints in logging, cowboying, and participating in the construction of the Trans-Canadian Highway, Dan enlisted in the Air Force Reserve. After completing his service in 1971, he started building an art foundry so he could build western-style sculptures like his Dad.

Completion of the foundry saw his most serious learning curve begin on all things related to and involving industrial processes. Curiosity and necessity forced him to learn how to make all the equipment he needed, picking up information about almost all fabrication and production processes throughout and becoming a “Jack of all trades.”

Dan is still heavily involved in learning, researching and implementing industrial processes and techniques. These include sign making, metal casting, welding, plasma cutting, wood working, CNC routing, digital design, stained glass, gourd art, mold making, metal fabrication, metal forming, prop making, blacksmithing and more. Be sure to see additional information on his new website, rlybrdboxco.com or his blog, dansfoundry.bogspot.com.

Old wood? Nope. This is Precision Board Plus with a piece of vinyl cleverly applied over the top of it. Dan Keith strikes again!

Hot off the Grill! HDU & BBQ Make A Great Combination

Summer’s here and BBQ season is about to move into full swing. In addition to the savory aromas emanating from their restaurant, Bailey’s Smokehouse in Blauvelt, NY, also has a brand new lighted Precision Board HDU sign, beautifully crafted by KDF Reprographics, to attract customers. Sign Builder Illustrated published a great article documenting how the sign was made (the final design was a complete surprise to the restaurant!).

Check out the article in its entirety here.

Marvelous Masterpiece: Custom Precision Board Fish Tank

When we first saw the custom Precision Board fish tank KDF Reprographics had made, we were awestruck. “That should be on T.V.”, and “I’ve never seen anything like it” were comments heard more than once.

A little background on this amazing project; you may notice that it says: “Institute For The Study of Mechanical Marine Life.” This is because the whole project is the result of a friendly competition started among some renowned sign makers – a project that was born at Indiana Rob’s Sign Camp earlier this year.

According to Stephen Hoey, President, and Brian Hamilton, Business Development Manager: “The story unfolds like this… We have a little fish that is scared to travel  – He’s built himself a mechanical fish out of driftwood to tool around the ocean so he can stay safe. The only way you can find this little guy is by using the specially designed periscope that was designed for … you guessed it “The Institute for the Study of Mechanical Marine Life.””

Hoey says, “We decided to go all-out for this competition and showcase all of the resources we could – graphics, metals, sculpture, Precision Board – everything we could think of. There are real fish inside, and it’s actually a functional fish tank. The control panel operates lights, gears, temperature, and opens the mechanical fish.”

They even put together an EXCELLENT video documenting the entire build process:

To see the step-by-step build process with great pictures showing plenty of Precision Board (they used a ton of PBLT-30), as well as everything else that went into this masterpiece, please visit the KDF Custom Graphics Blog.
