Coastal Enterprises, manufacturers of Precision Board HDU, is proud to host guest blogs written by some of the signage industry’s biggest movers and shakers, posted to the Precision Board Blog. This guest blog is written by Steve Kolacz with GrafiXhouse Design Studios, based in North Carolina. Steve tells us how he used hand-carving tools to add dimensionality to a Precision Board high-density urethane foam sign.
In Steve’s own words…
In the world of business, it can be easy to lose ourselves in the work – to forget that art is made for entertainment and the elation of creativity. Here at Grafixhouse, we love to have a good time and bring enjoyment through our art, to remember the fun behind the function of what we design. So, when a customer asked us to create a sign that could take an inside joke and make it into a vibrant piece of art, we were happy to oblige.
In order to make the sign, we decided to use our trusted HDU 15-pound Precision Board (PBLT-15). We began by routing out the rough shape of the sign with a CNC. We then used rasps and sandpaper to shape the bottles and foam by hand.
Once we completed the shapes, we primed the material and gave it a top coat using 1shot lettering enamels. We wanted to evoke the feelings one gets relaxing and enjoying each other’s company at the lake, while also creating a fetching piece of art for the customer.
In the end, we were able to create a mixed-media sign full of life and color that did both. A sign that served to remind not only the customer, but also us, that sometimes you need to step back and enjoy the high life.
GrafiXhouse Design Studios is located in North Carolina and is staffed by professional artists that have degrees in fine art and advertising. They do everything from logo design, company branding and marketing to 3d signs, tradeshow props and banners. We are very impressed with their work and highly recommend them.
